Harry Potter Dragon Names — Norbert, the Horntail & More
Every dragon in the Harry Potter series — named individuals, all Triwizard species, and the complete Wizarding World dragon classification. With lore, behaviour, and danger ratings.
The named dragons in Harry Potter are Norbert (later Norberta) — Hagrid's Norwegian Ridgeback from Philosopher's Stone — and the unnamed Ukrainian Ironbelly at Gringotts that Harry, Ron, and Hermione ride to escape in Deathly Hallows. Most Wizarding World dragons are identified by species rather than individual name. The four Triwizard dragons are: Hungarian Horntail (Harry), Swedish Short-Snout (Cedric), Common Welsh Green (Fleur), and Chinese Fireball (Viktor).
Norbert / Norberta
Hagrid wins a black dragon egg in a card game at the Hog's Head and becomes obsessed with hatching it — the culmination of his lifelong dream of owning a dragon. Norbert is hatched in Hagrid's hut, immediately sets his blanket on fire and bites Ron. He grows at an alarming rate. Harry and Hermione arrange for Norbert to be sent to Charlie Weasley's reserve in Romania. In Deathly Hallows, Charlie mentions that Norbert was discovered to be female and renamed Norberta — a small, retroactively charming detail about dragon sexing being difficult in hatchlings.
The Gringotts Dragon
One of the most affecting dragon moments in the series. This unnamed Ukrainian Ironbelly has been kept in the deepest vaults of Gringotts for so long that it has gone blind and its scales have lost their colouration. The goblins control it through Pavlovian conditioning — a sharp noise (Clankers) was associated with pain, so it retreats from the sound. Harry, Ron, and Hermione use this conditioning to escape the vault, then ride the dragon to freedom. The image of a creature this large, finally free, flying into open sky is genuinely moving.

Harry Potter Dragon Questions
Frequently Asked Questions
The named dragons in Harry Potter are: Norbert (later revealed to be female and renamed Norberta) — Hagrid's Norwegian Ridgeback hatchling. The Gringotts dragon (a blind Ukrainian Ironbelly, unnamed in the books) that Harry, Ron, and Hermione ride to escape in Deathly Hallows. Most Wizarding World dragons are known by species rather than individual names: Hungarian Horntail, Chinese Fireball, Swedish Short-Snout, Common Welsh Green.
Norbert is a Norwegian Ridgeback — a rare species known for its black scales, venomous bite (one of the only fire-breathing dragons with a toxic bite as well), and unusually aggressive temperament. Hagrid hatches Norbert from a black egg he wins in a card game in Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone. The dragon is later sent to Charlie Weasley in Romania, where it is discovered to be female and renamed Norberta.
Harry faces the Hungarian Horntail in the First Task of the Triwizard Tournament (Goblet of Fire). The Hungarian Horntail is considered the most dangerous dragon species in Europe — highly aggressive, long-ranged fire breath, heavily armoured with spikes. Harry survives by summoning his Firebolt broomstick and outflying it. The other Triwizard champions faced: Cedric Diggory — Swedish Short-Snout; Fleur Delacour — Common Welsh Green; Viktor Krum — Chinese Fireball.
The dragon guarding the deepest vaults at Gringotts is a Ukrainian Ironbelly — the largest dragon breed in existence, normally silvery-grey with long talons. This particular dragon has been kept underground for so long it has gone blind and its scales have turned pale from lack of sunlight. In Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Harry, Ron, and Hermione ride it to escape after breaking into Bellatrix Lestrange's vault. It is unnamed in the books.
Dragon species mentioned in Harry Potter and Fantastic Beasts: Norwegian Ridgeback, Hungarian Horntail, Chinese Fireball, Swedish Short-Snout, Common Welsh Green, Ukrainian Ironbelly, Romanian Longhorn, Hebridean Black, Antipodean Opaleye, Peruvian Vipertooth, Portugese Long-Snout, and the Catalonian Fireball. Charlie Weasley works as a dragon handler in Romania, specialising in Romanian Longhorns. The Ministry of Magic classifies dragons as XXXXX (known wizard killer) — the highest danger rating.
Not easily, and never completely. Hagrid's attempt to raise Norbert as a pet demonstrates how impossible domestication is — even as a hatchling, Norbert bites Ron severely and sets his crib on fire. Dragon handling (like Charlie Weasley's career) involves working with dragons in controlled environments, not taming them. The Gringotts dragon had been conditioned to retreat from the sound of Clankers (noise-makers) through abuse — a form of control but not taming. Dumbledore's explanation in Fantastic Beasts context implies dragons are fundamentally undomesticatable.
