Game of Thrones & HOTD Dragon Names

Every named Targaryen dragon from Game of Thrones and House of the Dragon — riders, meanings, fates, and what makes each name iconic in the A Song of Ice and Fire universe.

Quick Answer

The three dragons in Game of Thrones are Drogon (named after Khal Drogo), Rhaegal (after Rhaegar Targaryen), and Viserion (after Viserys Targaryen). In House of the Dragon and the wider Targaryen history, there are over 20 named dragons — the most significant being Balerion the Black Dread (the largest ever), Vhagar (oldest surviving), and Caraxes (Daemon's blood-red Blood Wyrm). Targaryen dragons are named by their riders, often after ancestors or with Valyrian phonetics.

Game of Thrones

Daenerys's Three Dragons

Named after people Daenerys loved and lost — each dragon reflects that grief.

Drogon

RiderDaenerys Targaryen
ColourBlack with red markings
Name OriginNamed after Khal Drogo, Daenerys's husband.
FateSurvived. Flew north with Daenerys's body.

The largest and most powerful of Daenerys's three dragons. Black scales, red-black wings, red eyes. He chose Daenerys as his rider unprompted. Named after her late husband Khal Drogo as a tribute. Drogon is fiercely loyal and the most aggressive of the three, often seen as the 'favourite.' He becomes the last surviving of the three by the series' end.

Rhaegal

RiderJon Snow (briefly)
ColourGreen with bronze highlights
Name OriginNamed after Rhaegar Targaryen, Daenerys's eldest brother.
FateKilled by Euron Greyjoy's scorpion bolts near Dragonstone.

Named after Rhaegar Targaryen, Daenerys's beloved eldest brother. Green and bronze-scaled. Rhaegal allows Jon Snow (Aegon Targaryen) to ride him in Season 8 — the only person other than Daenerys able to bond with one of her dragons. His death is widely considered one of the most abrupt in the series.

Viserion

RiderNight King (as ice dragon)
ColourCream/gold (alive); blue-white (undead)
Name OriginNamed after Viserys Targaryen, Daenerys's older brother.
FateKilled by Night King's ice spear; resurrected as ice dragon. Killed again at the Battle of Winterfell.

Named after her controlling, resentful brother Viserys. Cream and gold in life. Killed Beyond the Wall by the Night King, who used a magical ice spear. Resurrected as an ice dragon with blue flame (which destroyed the Wall). Died when the Night King was killed by Arya Stark.

House of the Dragon

Targaryen Dragons — Dance of the Dragons Era

The Targaryen civil war involved more dragons than any other conflict in Westerosi history.

Balerion

"The Black Dread"
Black
Rider(s): Aegon the Conqueror, Maekar I, Viserys I Size: Largest dragon in history — could swallow a mammoth whole

The greatest dragon that ever lived. Balerion's fire could melt stone and his shadow blotted out whole towns. He carried Aegon the Conqueror during the Conquest and lived for over 200 years. His skull was kept in the Red Keep's dragon pit as a trophy — and a warning. The word 'Balerion' has become synonymous with absolute destructive power.

Fate: Died of old age 94 BC. His skull displayed in King's Landing.

Vhagar

"The Old Grey Queen"
Pale grey-green
Rider(s): Visenya Targaryen, Laena Velaryon, Aemond Targaryen Size: Second largest ever, after Balerion

The oldest and largest living dragon during the Dance of Dragons. Originally ridden by Visenya Targaryen during the Conquest. In HOTD, Vhagar is won by Aemond Targaryen after Laena Velaryon's death — a political coup that raises massive tension in the Targaryen family. Her enormous size means she can kill younger dragons in a single encounter.

Fate: Killed during the Dance of Dragons by Caraxes and Daemon Targaryen. Crashed into Gods Eye lake.

Caraxes

"The Blood Wyrm"
Blood red, elongated neck
Rider(s): Aemon Targaryen, Daemon Targaryen Size: Large — unusually serpentine build

Daemon Targaryen's iconic mount. Caraxes is distinctive for his elongated, serpentine build — unlike the stockier shape of most dragons. Blood-red, scarred, fast. His bond with Daemon is absolute and famous. Their fatal mutual combat with Vhagar and Aemond Targaryen above the Gods Eye is the defining moment of the Dance of Dragons.

Fate: Survived his fatal fight with Vhagar — barely. Found dying on the shore of Gods Eye.

Syrax

"Rhaenyra's Queen"
Yellow-gold
Rider(s): Rhaenyra Targaryen Size: Large (but kept well-fed and never combat-hardened)

Queen Rhaenyra's dragon, bonded since childhood. Syrax is large and powerful but lacked combat experience — she was kept well-fed, docile, and rarely sent to fight. Her death during the Storming of the Dragonpit — killed by a frenzied mob — was both a shock and a symbol of the war's destruction turning inward.

Fate: Killed in the Storming of the Dragonpit (King's Landing). Mobbed and killed by an Essosi crowd.

Meleys

"The Red Queen"
Scarlet with pink horns
Rider(s): Alyssa Targaryen, Rhaenys Targaryen Size: Large — considered one of the fastest

Rhaenys Targaryen's magnificent mount — widely considered one of the fastest dragons alive. Her brilliant scarlet scales and rose-pink horns made her unmistakable. Her death at Rook's Rest (taken on by both Vhagar and Sunfyre at once) was a turning point in the war — and the death of Rhaenys Targaryen with her.

Fate: Killed at the Battle of Rook's Rest. Overwhelmed by Vhagar and Sunfyre simultaneously.

Sunfyre

"The Golden"
Gold with pale pink flame
Rider(s): Aegon II Targaryen Size: Large — considered the most beautiful dragon

Aegon II's magnificent dragon — widely described as the most beautiful in living memory. Gold scales, pale gold wing membranes, golden flame with pink highlights. Sunfyre was severely wounded multiple times during the Dance of Dragons, yet refused to die. His survival through multiple serious injuries became legendary, though he died of his wounds within months of the war's end.

Fate: Died of wounds after the Dance. Never fully recovered from Meleys and then Moondancer.

Vermithor

"The Bronze Fury"
Bronze with pale tan wings
Rider(s): Jaehaerys I, Hugh Hammer Size: Very large — second only to Vhagar among living dragons in HOTD

One of the largest and oldest dragons during the Dance of Dragons. Long riderless after Jaehaerys I's death, Vermithor was claimed by Hugh Hammer — a dragonseeds (a Targaryen bastard). His enormous size made him one of the most powerful weapons in the conflict. He killed three enemy dragons at Tumbleton before finally being brought down.

Fate: Killed at the Second Battle of Tumbleton. Killed three other dragons before dying.

Dreamfyre

"The She-Dragon of King's Landing"
Pale blue with silver markings
Rider(s): Rhaena Targaryen, Helaena Targaryen Size: Medium-large

Helaena Targaryen's dragon. Pale blue and silver, Dreamfyre was considered graceful and elegant. Her end in the Storming of the Dragonpit is one of the most tragic in the Dance of Dragons — chained in the pit, blinded by a bolt, she went berserk and killed many of the attacking mob before finally being brought down.

Fate: Killed in the Storming of the Dragonpit. Half-blinded by a crossbow bolt, she broke her chains and killed dozens before dying.

Seasmoke

"The Grey Ghost of Driftmark"
Pale grey
Rider(s): Laenor Velaryon, Addam of Hull Size: Medium — young at time of Dance

Laenor Velaryon's dragon, later claimed by Addam of Hull (a Velaryon bastard). Pale grey, swift. Seasmoke's bond with Laenor was deep; when Laenor 'died' (actually faked his death), Seasmoke refused new riders for years. Addam of Hull's bonding with him was considered proof of his Velaryon/Targaryen blood.

Fate: Killed at the Second Battle of Tumbleton, locked in combat with Vermithor and Tessarion.

Arrax

White with pale gold
Rider(s): Lucerys Velaryon Size: Small — very young

Luke Velaryon's young dragon. Small, white, newly mature. His death at the jaws of Vhagar — ambushed by Aemond Targaryen despite a supposed safe-conduct — is the spark that ignites the Dance of Dragons. The scene in HOTD (Arrax defying Luke's commands and attacking Vhagar) perfectly captures how young dragonriders could not always control their mounts.

Fate: Killed by Vhagar over Shipbreaker Bay. The inciting event of the Dance of Dragons.

Moondancer

Pale green
Rider(s): Baela Targaryen Size: Young, small

Baela Targaryen's young dragon. Small and relatively inexperienced, Moondancer nevertheless attacked the vastly more powerful Sunfyre when Aegon II attempted to escape Dragonstone. She grounded Sunfyre — raking his wing, crippling him — before dying of her burns. Her courage in fighting far above her weight class is legendary.

Fate: Mortally wounded fighting Aegon II and Sunfyre. Died of burns.

How Targaryen Dragon Names Work

Targaryen dragon naming follows several distinct patterns across the franchise:

  • Named after family members: Rhaegal (after Rhaegar), Viserion (after Viserys). This tradition ties the dragon's identity to Targaryen bloodlines.
  • Descriptive Valyrian compounds: Sunfyre (gold/sun), Silverwing (silver wings), Vermithor (bronze fury), Seasmoke (grey like sea fog). These names are essentially kennings — two concepts merged.
  • Pure Valyrian phonetics: Caraxes, Syrax, Meleys, Arrax, Tessarion. These follow Valyrian phonetics: hard C/K sounds, -ax endings, -ys endings, flowing vowels. They sound ancient and non-English by design.
  • Title-like names: Balerion (the Black Dread), Meleys (the Red Queen). Some dragons accumulate epithets that describe their power or appearance.
